Mathe Moved Mills & DeFilippis To The Cloud For A More Convenient Work Experience
Mills & DeFilippis is a CPA firm, serving a range of clients from small businesses to larger corporations throughout the US. Like many businesses, for some time, Mills & DeFilippis handled IT internally. One of their partners had enough technical know-how to manage the onsite IT tasks, and when it became too complicated, they outsourced to a local IT technician.
“I’m a partner here, but I was also the IT guy,” says Glenn Thurnes, Partner, Mills & DeFilippis. “I did a lot of that, but we also had someone else we used for anything that was beyond me. I would set all the computers up, but once it came to networking, we had someone onsite who rented space from us that would handle that for us.”
However, this arrangement wouldn’t work for Mills & DeFilippis forever — they eventually knew they needed to move to the cloud to make it easier to access client data while they worked remotely and visiting contacts in other states. That’s why they started working with Mathe.
“We wanted to go to the cloud,” says Glenn. “I have a lot on my plate as it is, so to take a bit of it off, pushing some of the IT work to someone else with the specialty, was something I wanted to do.”
While they didn’t know it at the time, moving to the cloud was critical in preparing them for the COVID-19 pandemic. IT resources have never been as important as they are now. In order for organizations to stay connected and productive while working remotely, they need the right technologies and processes in place.
“I wanted to be in the cloud just in case we had an issue, and obviously it worked out very well for us, with the situation this year with COVID-19,” says Glenn. “Everyone worked from home. Being in the cloud certainly helped with that.”
Due to how quickly the pandemic developed, many businesses were unable to prepare for the shift to a remote work setting. Doing so would have required careful planning, methodical execution of new processes, and expert implementation of new technologies — fortunately for Mills & DeFilippis, Mathe had already moved them to the cloud.
“Everything we access is on that environment, our tax program, we’re paperless, so all our work papers are on there,” says Glenn. “It works out well — when we went to a client, if we forgot to download the previous year’s information, we had additional work to do when we returned. Now we don’t have to worry about that because we have access to it.”
In addition to supporting their remote work model for the first few months of the pandemic, being in the cloud also allows Mills & DeFilippis to access data when and where they need to.
“Also, we travel down to Florida,” says Glenn. “I went down last January, and it was just like I was working here. I just bring the laptop down, log in, and it’s as if I’m working at my desk. To me, the cloud is invaluable.”
To this day, Mills & DeFilippis enjoys responsive, expert support from the Mathe team. No matter when they have an issue, they know they can place a call or send an email, and Mathe will be there to help.
“Even the other day, over the weekend, I sent an email, and there they were replying on Sunday,” says Glenn. “Overall they’re very responsive.”
With over 35 years in the business of supporting and implementing technology for the SME market, and 6 years previously in Corporate IT and Voice. I have seen a great deal of change. The only common thread is I have always focused on the Business Wise application of Technology. We always try to look 5 years ahead of the current technology to make sure our clients are on the right track to meet current and future needs.
